Will AI Replace Recruiters?

Every month brings another headline about AI’s recruitment takeover. ‘Will AI replace recruiters?‘ ‘Another wave of redundancies.‘ ‘Your job is next.

This kind of content is written to scare you – because fear drives clicks and engagement, and they know it.

The question keeps coming up in board meetings and hiring strategy sessions: can AI actually be trusted to make your hiring decisions?

It’s probably the most talked about topic in the industry right now, so we wanted to write a blog explaining our opinion and how we think it should be used.

We’re nowhere close to an AI system that can run an entire hiring process end to end, and any business banking on that today is taking on more risk than they realise. AI has mastered the mechanical layer: drafting job ads, screening CVs and scheduling interviews. That’s real, and it genuinely speeds up the process.

What AI still can’t do is make the judgement call that decides whether a hire actually works out. It can match a CV to a job spec. It can’t tell you if someone’s real motivation lines up with what the role offers, if they’ll still want the job in 18 months, or if they’ll thrive in a team that looks nothing like their last one on paper.

That’s the part of hiring that isn’t mechanical. It’s also the part that decides whether your next hire is a success or a costly mistake.

Do candidates actually want AI deciding who gets hired?

Ask candidates and the answer is no. A 2025 survey of nearly 3,000 candidates found that 68% prefer human recruiters over AI or chatbots, up from 58% two years earlier.

Around 66% of US adults say they would avoid applying for a job that uses AI to make hiring decisions and most want a human recruiter involved before any offer goes out.

Workers worry that AI models will misjudge their skills or overlook the story behind a career break. Whether that’s a mother returning after five years raising her kids or someone who pivoted industries after being made redundant during COVID. People want human understanding and logic when assessing their circumstances.

They also resent feeling like they’re talking to a machine at one of the most human, high-stakes moments in their careers. Changing jobs is not a low-risk decision. Leaving a stable role means walking away from certainty and if the new one doesn’t work out, the fallout is real: a mortgage to pay, a family to support and income they can’t afford to lose.

No algorithm can reassure someone that a decision this big is the right one. Only a person who understands what’s actually at stake can do that.

Taken together, the message from employees is consistent: they may accept automation for admin tasks, but they want real humans making the judgements that shape their livelihoods.

Will AI replace recruiters?

Human Recruiters vs AI

The best recruiters diagnose what a hiring manager needs rather than what the job spec says. They read motivation, move passive candidates who were not looking and navigate board politics.

They build the trust that closes an offer when both sides are nervous.

As recent research on AI makes clear, automation can speed up parts of hiring, but it cannot replace the human judgement required to evaluate leadership potential, read cultural fit or understand the strategic context behind a role.

AI ranks a longlist in seconds. It cannot sit across from a CEO and explain why the second-best CV is the right hire.

This is not anti-technology. It is human plus machine, with the human owning the decisions that carry risk. Let AI compress the list-building and the chasing. It can free up time so our team can focus on their superpowers which is finding top talent for our clients.

The job is evolving, not shrinking. This is why our view is Human powered by AI.

How does Solutions Driven blend AI and human judgement?

We use research, market mapping and analytics to find and benchmark candidates across 60+ countries. This is where AI earns its place. We couldn’t find candidates at this scale without it and that’s common practice across critical hire recruitment. Clients expect this stage to run on technology.

Once we have the data, our experienced consultants take over. They apply judgement AI doesn’t have. The data tells us where the right people are, our consultants work out whether those people will succeed in your business.

Our talent specialists apply our Hiring Operating System and follow the 6S Process. They have multiple touchpoints with candidates to gauge personal traits and role fit no AI tool can measure.

This combined approach delivers a 97% right-hire, first-time. That number is only possible when human judgement sits on top of the technology, not the other way around.

No AI can guarantee your new hire stays 12-18 months. We can.

The bottom line

AI will keep getting better, faster and more embedded and that is good news. It will make great recruiters even better and lazy recruiters even worse! It allows recruiters to offer more value to their customers and focus their time doing tasks only a human can.

AI will not feel empathy or stake its reputation on a person succeeding. So, we will continue implementing AI tools that will allow us to work more efficiently but we will never hand over tasks that demand human skill or connection.
